New Patients: What to Expect at Your First Visit

From what to bring to how we help kids feel at ease, here is a simple guide to your first visit with our Beaverton pediatric and family dental team.

Short answer: Request an appointment online or call (503) 822-0096, and we will share new-patient paperwork when you book. Bring your ID, insurance information if you have it, and a list of any medications or health conditions. For children, we recommend a first visit by the first birthday or when the first tooth appears.

Before your first visit

Booking is simple. You can request an appointment online or call us at (503) 822-0096. Tell us who the visit is for, their age, and anything you would like us to know, such as a toothache, a nervous child, or a special health need. That helps us plan the right amount of time.

When you book, we will share new-patient paperwork with you and explain how to complete it. Filling it out ahead of time means less waiting and more time for questions in the office.

What to bring

For every patient

  • Photo ID for an adult, or for the parent or guardian of a minor
  • Dental insurance card or benefit details, if you have coverage
  • Completed paperwork, if you were able to finish it at home
  • A short list of questions or concerns

Health information

  • Current medications and supplements
  • Allergies, especially to latex, medications, or foods
  • Medical conditions, recent surgeries, or specialists involved in care
  • Recent dental X-rays, if another office has them and you can request copies

Not sure whether something matters? Bring it or mention it. It is easier to sort out details together than to guess.

What happens at a child’s first visit

A first dental visit for a young child is more about getting comfortable than getting work done. Here is how it usually goes.

  1. Welcome and chat. We start with hellos and, for older kids, a little conversation about school, pets, or favorite things.
  2. Health and habit review. We ask about feeding, brushing, snacks, pacifier or thumb habits, and any concerns you have.
  3. Gentle exam. Dr. Hsu looks at teeth, gums, bite, and jaw growth. Very young children are often examined in a knee-to-knee position with a parent.
  4. Cleaning and fluoride as appropriate. Depending on age and cooperation, we may polish teeth and apply fluoride varnish.
  5. Talk and plan. You get clear feedback and a simple plan for home and for return visits.

X-rays are taken only when needed and are guided by each child’s age and risk. For a deeper walkthrough, see your child’s first dental visit, and for babies, infant oral health.

How to prepare your child

You do not need a script. A few small habits help most.

Keep the words neutral

Say things like “the dentist will count your teeth.” Avoid “it won’t hurt” or “don’t be scared,” which plant the very idea you are trying to avoid.

Play pretend

Let your child be the dentist for a stuffed animal, or take turns opening wide and counting teeth in the mirror.

Pick a good time

Schedule when your child is usually rested and fed. A tired, hungry child has a much harder time being brave.

Parent tip: Stay calm and upbeat in the room. Children read your face. If you are nervous about the dentist yourself, tell us. We will help you stay relaxed so your child can too.

If your child has a sensory sensitivity or medical need, call ahead so we can plan. Our page on dentistry for children with special health care needs explains how we approach those visits.

What to expect at an adult visit

Adult new-patient visits with Dr. Gvozden begin with a conversation about your health, your goals, and any dental worries. He will complete a thorough exam, review your teeth, gums, and bite, and discuss whether X-rays are needed. If you have been away from the dentist for a while, you do not need to apologize or explain. We will start where you are and make a plan at a pace that feels manageable.

Many parents schedule their own visit around a child’s appointment. Ask us about options when you call. Learn more about adult exams and cleanings.

Have a toothache or an injury? Tell us when you call, and we will help you sort out the next step. See our emergency dentist page for what to do right away.

Questions about coverage? Read insurance and payment options, or ask when you book. We are happy to look at your benefits before your visit.

FAQ

Questions parents (and adults) often ask

When should my child have their first dental visit?

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry and the ADA recommend a first visit by your child’s first birthday, or within about six months after the first tooth appears. Early visits are short and focus on prevention, feeding habits, and helping your child feel at ease.

Do I need to fill out forms before we arrive?

We will share new-patient paperwork when you book and explain how to complete it. Doing it ahead of time is helpful, but if life gets busy, let us know and we will help you at the office.

Can I stay with my child during the visit?

Yes, especially for babies and toddlers. Parents are welcome and often help in the exam. For older children, we sometimes suggest a little independence, but you decide what is comfortable for your family.

What if my child is scared or won’t open their mouth?

That is completely normal. We slow down, show and explain everything, and do only what your child can handle. Many first visits are mostly about building trust. Call us if you would like to talk it through before you come.

Do you see adults as new patients?

Yes. Dr. Gvozden provides general dentistry for adults, including exams, cleanings, fillings, extractions, and implant placement. Call (503) 822-0096 to schedule.

Will you check my insurance before my visit?

We are happy to check your dental benefits before your appointment. Have your insurance card handy when you call or book. See insurance and payment options for more.

Ready to book your child’s visit?

Tell us a little about your family and we’ll reach out to find a time that works. New patients — kids, teens and adults — are welcome, and we accept almost all dental insurance and the Oregon Health Plan (OHP).
