Our story and philosophy

About Bien Dental: Pediatric & Family Dentistry in Beaverton

A Beaverton practice built around children, with two dentists who believe good dental care should feel calm, clear, and kind.

Short answer: Bien Dental is a pediatric and family dental practice in Beaverton, Oregon, designed around children. Dr. Hsu, our pediatric dentist, cares for infants, kids, and teens. Dr. Jovan Gvozden, DMD, provides general dentistry for parents and other adults. “Bien” is Spanish for “well” or “good.”

What does “bien” mean?

In Spanish, bien means well, good, or done right. We chose it because it describes both halves of what we want a dental visit to be: a child who feels well afterward, and care that is done properly.

It is also just a friendly word. Kids can say it, parents can remember it, and it sets a tone we hope you notice from the first phone call: unhurried, kind, and clear about what is happening and why.

Why we built a practice around kids

Most adults with a dental fear can trace it to something in childhood. A rushed appointment, a surprise, a room that felt too big. Pediatric dentistry exists to prevent that story from starting. Children’s mouths, attention spans, and emotions all work differently from an adult’s, and the office itself should be built to respect that.

Every decision starts with one question: will this make a child more comfortable and a parent better informed?

We are not here to invent a gimmick. We are here to do the quiet, dependable things well: listen first, explain plainly, keep visits a sensible length, and follow up when something needs attention.

Good dental care for children is mostly prevention, patience, and trust. The drill is the exception, not the plan.

How we care for children

Our philosophy is simple to state and takes daily effort to practice.

Prevention first

Regular checkups, fluoride, sealants, and coaching at home keep most children out of the treatment chair. When a cavity does show up, we would rather catch it early and small.

Comfort at the child’s pace

We explain each step in words a child understands, let them see and touch the tools, and never rush past a worry. For some children, nitrous oxide may help, and Dr. Hsu decides that case by case.

Together they let a family share one dental home. Kids see Dr. Hsu, who has spent about 19 years caring for children’s teeth, and parents can schedule their own care with a dentist who understands why the waiting room matters. You can read more on our dentists page.

What we believe

  • A child’s first dental experience should be gentle and free of fear-based language.
  • Honest, plain explanations beat scare tactics every time.
  • Prevention is kinder, cheaper, and easier than repair.
  • Families come in all shapes, schedules, and comfort levels, and care should adapt to them.
  • Adults deserve a calm, respectful dental home too, especially those who have avoided the dentist.

We follow the guidance of the American Dental Association and the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, including the recommendation that children see a dentist by their first birthday or when the first tooth appears.
